In regards to most photography portfolios, social media feeds, studios, soundstages, or modeling gigs, a very popular question that gets asked would be along the lines of “what type of equipment are you using/do you use/is the best to use.”
This question has also been brought to me multiple times in regards to modeling/social media content.
Obviously, there are a multitude of options out there, and, at the end of the day, it’s always apropos to find out what works best for you!
Today, I want to discuss one specific item I bring with me without fail to almost every single social media content shoot..and—might I add—this item will with out a doubt change your content game for the better!
1. Reflectors!
Reflectors will be a game changer for any of you wanting to enhance your social media level, trying to put together a modeling portfolio, or if you are a photographer.
Essentially it boils down to the fact that If you use photography in your line of work—whatever that may be—a reflector is one of the best inexpensive investments you can make!
The one that I use is a 43” five-in-one reflector set by Newer! Click Here To Order
This set has five separate reflectors that can create and help with lighting/shadowing in your photos! Let me go ahead and briefly describe each of them for you and how they work, that way you can get a better understanding of how to use them if/when you get a set of your own!
1. Silver—This reflector is great for creating that white lighting or “flash effect” on a subject. Because of the intensity this one may carry, it may be easy to over-expose you or your client in the shot!
2. Gold—This reflector is great for casting that “golden hour” glow on the model for the shoot! However, this one is also extremely intense as far as the reflection ratio of the lighting it casts; thus, you risk the fact of creating too much of a yellow hue/fake skin-tan look per-say on your model.
*(I used the Gold Reflector to capture the Essence of the shot for this post! Notice how smoothly it cancels out the shadows, whilst creating that golden glow/dewey shine to my skin and face!)*
3. Translucent—This reflector isn’t so much made for reflecting so much as it’s made to soften the lighting between your model and the sun. Therefore, for the use of this “reflector,” make sure it is placed between the light source and the model for desired effect!
4. White—This reflector is almost like the distant cousin of the silver reflector! Haha Basically, it creates the same white lighting effect, but on a much softer scale. Usually, you would want to be closer to the model with the reflector to see better results!
5. Black—This reflector is used to create shadows/depth or remove light that may be reflecting too harshly off of items, the background, or the model! This reflector works best being closer to the model as well!
Well, I hope that gave you not only a good idea of how different reflectors work, but also why you should invest in some with your photography!
Positive Thought—One thing that is hard to find today are people that are Real, Authentic, Genuine, and True.
Sometimes without even thinking that we are, we put on a facade for others to perceive of what may be a completely alternate version of the person we truly are.
Being Real, Being True, Being Genuine isn’t easy. It takes courage, bravery, commitment, and vulnerability to make each of those happen.
The biggest part to being real is showing every part of who you are and bearing it out on the table for others to see! Of course, some things are meant to keep private and not publicly broadcasting. However, it’s being willing to be open to others that allows your truest self to emerge.
It isn’t easy, but then again, nothing in life really is. haha The things that take more effort to obtain have more gratification as the end result for you to enjoy and be proud of.
Love the parts of you that you hide, and be willing to share those vulnerable, hidden and beautiful attributes with the world.
You will thank yourself that you did, and—who knows—maybe you will just find more enjoyment and love in the person who you are within and without!
